The Rat / The Mouse

The Rat / The Mouse

Rats and mice have very similar behaviors and lifestyles.

Rat
Longevity: 2-4 years
Weight: 300-500g for male, 250-300 for female

Mouse
Longevity: 1-3 years
Weight: 20-40g

Habitat:

  • Structure of the cage: mesh to promote natural ventilation and floors

  • Size of the cage: minimum 50 x 30 x 20 cm
  • Optimal temperature: 18-22°C
  • Substrate: The litter must be very absorbent and not dusty (hemp litter for example). Scented chips should be avoided as they are irritating to the respiratory tract. The litter must remain dry and must therefore be changed at least twice a week because the ammonia contained in the urine can cause respiratory problems.
  • Cage Enrichment: It is good to have hiding places, an exercise wheel and games in the cage.

Behaviour:

The chinchilla is a nocturnal animal, it sleeps all day and begins to come out at dusk. It is a social animal, so it is best to have several chinchillas. Be careful, two males together could fight. It is preferable to put together a male and one or more females.

Handling:

Don't grab your chinchilla by the scruff of the neck or the tip of the tail, as it can shed in patches. It is best to hold it with one hand at shoulder level and the second under the croup.
