How to clean your dog's ears?
How to clean your dog's ears?
Ear cleaning is a simple gesture that should be initiated from an early age in order to get the dog used to it so that this procedure is well accepted and is not a source of stress for either the animal or its masters.
The dog's ear canal is long and angled. Hehas a greater or lesser quantity of sebaceous glands and cerumen glands.
Regular cleaning carried out in good conditions makes it possible to limit the appearance of auricular pathologies.
What frequency?
The frequency depends on many factors: dog breed, drooping or erect ears, amount of earwax secreted, dog habits (frequent bathing, etc.). On average cleaning every 8 to 10 days is recommended. In dogs, therefore, the duct does not clog up much, in which the quantity of earwax is low, cleaning every 15 days to every month may be sufficient.
In case of otitis the frequency of cleaning can be increased.
Which product?
The inside of the auricular pavilions can be cleaned with specific wipes. As far as the ear canal is concerned, there are many ear lotions that can be used first. In some cases, the consistency of the earwax (dry or rather greasy, oily) will direct you to a more suitable product. In this situation, you should seek advice from your veterinarian.
How to do?
Do not use a cotton swabwhich will only push the wax to the bottom of the ear. However, it is possible to use it to clean the folds at the entrance to the duct. The bottles of ear lotions have a non-traumatic adapted tip.
It is important to strain (gently) the ear to clear the entrance to the canal, especially in breeds with drooping ears. After inserting the tip, pressure is exerted on the bottle, a little product is poured into the ear canal. An external massage of the conduit allows a good diffusion. Then with a compress or paper towel (Sopalin) we recover the product with the earwax. Usually the dog shakes his head after this stage and sometimes it is necessary to wipe again.
Do not forget to reward your animal after the session.
Should the entrance to the duct be depilated?
Some breeds (Bichon, Poodle, etc.) have abundant hair at the entrance to the auditory canal which can interfere with good ventilation of the ear. It is possible to epilate this area gently with your fingers or with tweezers
