Dermatology consultations are by appointment.
The first consultation lasts 20 to 30 minutes.
Dermatological pathologies are frequent and represent one of the main reasons for consultation in a veterinary clinic. In addition, these are often chronic or recurrent diseases, requiring long-term care.
In the vast majority of cases, the necessary additional examinations are carried out on the spot, without reassurance, which makes it possible to have the results at the end of the consultation (skin scrapings, microscopic examination of hairs, cytological examinations).
A skin biopsy is an examination sometimes necessary to diagnose a skin disease. The principle is to take one or more small pieces of skin from different areas of the body depending on the lesions observed.
Local anesthesia is often sufficient for these biopsies especially if performed on the trunk. On the other hand, for biopsies on the head or fingers, general anesthesia is sometimes necessary.
The samples are then sent to a specialized laboratory.
The main reason for consultation includes allergic dermatoses and their complications: allergy to flea bites, food allergies/intolerances, allergy to house dust mites, pollens, etc.
The care of an atopic animal requires a global approach with often associated treatments (drugs, anti-parasitic, topical, shampoos, creams, specific food, etc.) sometimes for the entire life of the animal.
It is sometimes necessary in allergic animals (most often dogs) to carry out allergological tests, as is done in humans. Extracts of allergens are injected intradermally into an area of skin on the thorax and the results are read 20 minutes later. These tests make it possible to choose the allergens used to desensitize an animal in which a diagnosis of atopic dermatitis has been made during a clinical examination.
A good collaboration between the veterinarian and the owner of an animal is essential for a good management of these dermatoses, in particular during atopic dermatitis.
